22 Mar Lost Pines Trail Runs Recap
Austin Runners Dominate the Lost Pines Trail Runs
On Sunday, March 20th, runners toed the start line in ideal running conditions. The vernal equinox, or first day of spring, brought about the perfect weather for the Lost Pines Trail Runs, held in Smithville, Texas. With temperatures in the low 40s at the start, participants began their race, either a 10K, half marathon, or marathon, on the challenging terrain at Rocky Hill Ranch. Austinites began to take over the race as temperatures began to slowly climb.
High Five Events produced the Lost Pines Trail Runs, which saw 270 participants cross the finish line. On a day where there wasn’t a cloud in the sky there were 122 finishers for the 10K, 116 for the half marathon, and 32 for the marathon. Joe Cooper (3:06:54) and Angie Balentine (4:21:16), both from Austin, finished first for the male and female divisions. Austinites Paul Terranova (3:21:35) and Alan Langham (3:32:18) finished second and third in the male division. Kimberly Evans (4:49:13) of Houston and Vanessa Mitchell (4:56:06) of Austin rounded out the female division, placing second and third.
“Hats off to marathon winner Joe Cooper, who absolutely blitzed the course from the gun,” said Paul Terranova, who finished second in the male division of the marathon. “He was quickly out of sight and made easy work of it. Also great to see women’s winner Angie Balentine finish strong.”
All of the top half marathon finishers for the male and female division also call Austin home. Paul Morris (1:25:05) won the male division and Amy Baker (1:38:08) won the female division. Rounding out the top male finishers were Jamie Stone (1:35:13) and Travis Gillespie (1:35:38). Claiming second and third for the female division were Stephanie Gonzalez (1:53:16) and Karly Wade (1:59:45).
Michael Mark (48:38), of Austin, finished first in the male division for the 10K. Jenelle Vincel (1:03:39), of Gordon, Texas, finished first in the female division. Coming in second and third in the male division were Austin locals Brian Wrona (54:53) and High Five Events’ own Dan Carroll (55:16). Finishing second and third were Sarah Kosan (1:07:06) and Kari Ponto (1:08:54), both of Austin.
Participants enjoyed great weather on the trails at Rocky Hill Ranch. Even with the recent rains, the trails were in terrific shape. Upon crossing the finish line and receiving their medal, runners and their friends and family took advantage of the warmer temperatures. The post-race party included photos, a cook out, plenty of snacks, and the opportunity for people to catch up with one another.
“It was an absolutely gorgeous day out there and the Rocky Hill Ranch trails were in impeccable condition, probably the best I’ve seen them in over 10 years,” said Terranova. “Thanks to the entire High Five Events team, their supporters, and sponsors for putting on a superb festival of trail running.”
High Five Events would like to thank all of the participants, sponsors, and volunteers for showing up and making the Lost Pines Trail Runs a success.
